Third Annual Kidney Disease Awareness Walks to Hit 20 Cities

DaVita KAT Walks Across America™ Selects Virginia Beach to Launch 2008 National Event

Virginia Beach, VA (June 29, 2021) — The 3rd annual national “Kidney Awareness Time” Walk-a-thon (KAT Walk) will kick off on June 29th in Virginia Beach. 13,000 walkers are expected to participate this year with a goal of raising money to fight chronic kidney disease (“CKD”) — a silent epidemic that affects 26 million adult Americans. The DaVita KAT Walks Across AmericaTM will pass through 20 cities nationwide, ending on December 7 in Orlando, Florida. Virginia Beach will be the first city on the tour and the walk will kick-off with Mayor Meyera E. Oberndorf and State Senator Yvonne Miller.

The 2008 DaVita KAT Walks Across America will benefit The Kidney TRUSTTM, a 501© 3 public charity founded by DaVita in 2006 that seeks to reduce the advancement of CKD by broadly deploying free rapid-screening for the disease in non-medical settings, and providing financial assistance to people affected by CKD.

26 million Americans have chronic kidney disease, yet nine in ten of them don’t even know it because early-stage CKD rarely has symptoms,” said Stephen Cadby, Event Director of the KAT Walks. “That’s why we walk — to let people know of the importance of getting tested now, rather than discover they have the disease when it is already too late and they need dialysis and a transplant.”

Early testing and detection gives those with CKD an opportunity to take control of their disease and avoid the onset of life threatening kidney failure, which would require dialysis or a kidney transplant to maintain life. People with CKD can protect their kidneys by controlling high blood pressure, controlling their blood sugar, drinking lots of water, and eating right.

Registration for each event on the tour begins at 8:30 a.m. with the walk beginning at 10:00 a.m. In most locations The TRUST will be providing free CKD assessment and or screening before and after each walk. A list of cities and locations, along with online registration forms, are available online at Registration fee for the event is $15, but participation is free to all kidney patients as well as children 12 and under. Registered walkers and volunteers will also receive a KAT Walk T-shirt.

Each KAT Walk will be 5K in length, or about 16,896 steps. When all walks have been completed in all 20 cities, the total number of steps — about 337,920 — will be approximately equal to the total number of Americans receiving dialysis treatment today. 26 million Americans have CKD and 325,000 have kidney failure and are on dialysis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recognizes CKD as a major public health problem that not only reduces both the quality and length of life, but is also expensive to treat.
